GENDER INEQUALITY

Male-dominated media undermines the power of women in society.

Gender Inequality

• dÊ’É›ndəɪˈ ÉªnɪˈkwÉ’lɪti •

Social process by which people are treated differently and disadvantageously, under similar circumstances, on the basis of gender.

In media, there is a clear male dominance, which also reinforces gender stereotypes. Two specific media platforms in which the power of women is undermined is journalism and filmmaking.

Journalism
Filmmaking

It is important to address gender inequality in the media because media often influences the beliefs of society. If men have more power in media, then their ideas directly influence society. The women who choose to raise children have influence in society, but women in the workplace often lack power. Additionally, stereotypes in journalism and filmmaking endorse old ideas that men are always heroic and dependable while women need saving. While we know these stereotypes are invalid, they are still reflected in male-dominated news outlets and Hollywood romances and action movies.

Both men and women should feel free to be sensitive. Both men and women should feel free to be strong… It is time that we all perceive gender on a spectrum not as two opposing sets of ideals.

I think we have the persuasive numbers, the data, to prove to men that gender equality is not a zero-sum game, but a win-win.

WHY the imbalance?

Why do men have more power than women? Society has evolved ideas which label women as less important in society than men. This has given men the advantage. These stereotypes have influenced generations to view men as the dominating gender, which gives men more opportunities to gain power in society. When men have the power, it becomes acceptable for them to dominate. The beliefs of society begin to favour men in powerful leadership roles. For this, women do not receive the same respect as men, and so it becomes harder for them to achieve leadership roles. This leads back to the beginning, where men dominate leadership roles. This cycle has prevented the world from achieving gender equality.
